That’s what it’s all about.
At least, we thought so back then, when “Bakerman” from Laid Back came out in 1989. The danish duo had other top-10 hits before, such as “Sunshine Reggae”, “White Horse” and “High Society Girl”, but Bakerman seemed to be the epiphany for us as music-producers. That ridiculously simple lines and the reduced harmonic structure appeared to be the essence of a song in general. And every time we tried to build up songs with artists and bands, that were in our studio, and we ran the risk of somehow over-producing them, we reminded ourselves to “take it easy” by citing “Bakerman – is baking bread”.
Bakerman – is baking bread. Still.
30 years ago this song was fresh, funny, hip and iconic. Could I dare to cover it? Of course I can, because they said so: “Take it easy – it’s too late to worry.” And I simply had to do this song. Although I had almost forgotten it. For quite some time I have a plan now for the album that I’m producing and as I already wrote, I want to do 12 songs. Surely I had some songs in the pipeline, but then something suddenly reminded me of Bakerman and I immediately knew, that this had to go first.
UPDATE: January 2020:
