A cover from a cover.
“Come Back and stay” was one of the first songs I had on my list, when I came up with the idea of making a whole album with my favorites from the 80s. And although the song was originally written by “The Nerves”, I first got in touch with it, when Paul Young became famous with his coverversion. I had everything from him and although “Wherever I lay my hat” was the song that I loved the most, I decided to do this one, because it seemed to be the bigger challenge. Paul Young is one of the greatest singers in my opinion and his iconic soulful voice almost always made me kind of aroused and excited when I listened to him.
And there you have the challenge: How could I find a way of interpreting this great song without completely fucking it up? I needed to find my own voice for the song and its meaning and build my own version around it. I’m pretty happy with the result although I’m not sure, if it will make it to the final songlist of my album. What do you think?
